Is this for me?
FAQ
1. How much does it cost?
US$100 via PayPal. This gives you access to a Google Classroom where you can view the templates, prepared examples, and the videos where I talk about how TWR looks in practice. You're not buying content. You are joining a community of likeminded practitioners who are committed to effective writing instruction for children. This is not a training course.
An annual membership renewal fee applies to new members from January 1, 2025. Founding members (who have joined the community prior to January 1, 2025) will have no change to their current membership agreement.
2. How do I purchase the templates?
Please send me an email at TWRMontessori@gmail(dot)com. I will reply with payment details and will add you to the Google Classroom once payment has been made - the Classroom can only be accessed whilst logged in with the email address you provide to me. You will also receive an invitation to join the next live workshop, or access to the recorded videos.
3. I am a Montessori Educator - is this for me?
The Montessori Cosmic Curriculum is fertile ground for the application of direct instruction techniques to developing thinking skills through writing. Unfortunately, explicit writing instruction does not form part of regular Montessori teaching training and this leaves many newly qualified Montessori teachers struggling to generate quality writing in their classrooms despite the rich impetus for expression of thought that exists in the Cosmic Curriculum - the backbone of the Montessori approach at the elementary and adolescent levels. Think Write Read provides a structured roadmap for the development of writing skills which is driven by content. The two approaches together, create an opportunity for the rich and vast cultural learning that is constructed by learners in Montessori classrooms to direct and express their thinking through writing. The templates will help you to create writing activities that align with TWR and the Montessori curriculum. In the workshop I explain how I use a TWR-inspired approach in a Montessori setting.
4. I am a Home Educator - is this for me?
The homeschool classroom is the perfect space for the application of direct instruction techniques to developing thinking skills through writing. Unfortunately, explicit writing instruction is not a skill that every homeschooling parent has under their belt.
Think Write Read is structured roadmap for the development of writing skills which is driven by content. Whilst it was created to serve teachers in school settings, it is an amazing tool for homeschooled children to learn how to direct and express their thinking through writing. Even those who "hate" writing. These templates will show you how to make thinking and writing a part of all the learning you do with your child. How to leverage their interests and use their questions to direct and advance their thinking through writing as an everyday activity. In the workshop I explain how I use a TWR-inspired approach to homeschooling.
5. I am a Literacy Tutor - is this for me?
Working as a Literacy Tutor is demanding work. You need to cram a lot of learning into an intense burst of one of one time with each student. You often need to cover multiple skills within each lesson, and there never seems to be enough time for writing. This approach helps you to prioritise writing during every lesson, and to use the writing process to teach grammar, sentence structure, spelling, style, and the mechanics of written expression in context through every activity you prepare for your students. These templates help you to leverage the interests of your students to create engaging materials for your lessons and for home practice. They allow you to build personalised activities for each student - matched to their skill level - without spending hours in front of the computer.
6. I am a Classroom Literacy Teacher - is this for me?
The Think Write Read Community is most applicable to teachers who are not teaching writing at a whole class level. If you teach smaller writing groups, pull groups of students for explicit instruction in writing, or work as a specialist teacher, you will find great value in the resources I share - they honour the original intent of most of the source texts I draw from, individualised writing instruction that develops skills within each student's zone of proximal development. You may certainly derive much benefit from the Think Write Read Community, even if your only instruction is at the whole class level, but I feel it is important to be upfront about the kind of support I provide in this space. I'm always happy to be of assistance wherever possible though!
7. Is this an official TWR/WVCEd/Montessori/Keys to Literacy/SRSD course?
Please note that the live and recorded workshop that I offer for free when you join the Think Write Read Community, is not affiliated with or officially recognised by The Writing Revolution, WVCED, Montessori, Keys to Literacy, SRSD or their authors. It is designed to provide a bridge between theory and practice for classroom educators, homeschooling parents and literacy tutors. It is a summary of my knowledge and experience with the Think Write Read approach in the Montessori Classroom, Clinical and Homeschool settings. It is inspired by The Writing Revolution book and the other approaches discussed on this website, but not endorsed by the organisations.
8. How is the workshop different from the official courses offered by the organisations mentioned?
This workshop is just about me sharing with you how a structured instructional writing approach can look in your space. It's based on the work I currently do, in various educational settings. It does not use any of the templates or downloads offered by TWR, or any of the official course material from any of these organisations. It does refer to books written by Judith Hochman and Natalie Wexler, William Van Cleave, Maria Montessori, and others. All the information I share with you is about how to take what you have read in the books, and USE it! It is based on the materials that I created to use with my students every day.
9. What do I need in order to participate in the workshop?
Essential: A computer with Zoom installed and some of your time. A copy of The Writing Revolution by Judith Hochman and Natalie Wexler.
Recommended: A copy of Writing Matters by William van Cleave, and for those who are working in Montessori settings, a wide selection of books by Maria Montessori.
